Stabilising Historic Georgian Buildings Amid Major Redevelopment Works
BKRN were tasked with restoring six severely deteriorated Georgian houses—part of the former Hume Street Hospital – while simultaneously demolishing unsafe rear additions and constructing a new six-storey modern building on a fully restricted city-centre site. The project demanded extensive structural stabilisation, careful protection of historic fabric, and precise coordination of piling, basement works, and modern building integration adjacent to protected structures.

Integrating Traditional Craftsmanship with Modern Engineering Solutions
BKRN delivered the redevelopment through a coordinated methodology combining conservation expertise, structural innovation, and advanced monitoring. The Georgian buildings were stabilised through underpinning and protective works, enabling safe excavation and piling beside fragile walls. A new modern building was constructed with an independent steel structure and connected to the restored terrace via fully separate bridge links. Just-In-Time logistics, discreet M&E integration, and specialist restoration of historic interiors ensured the project met all technical, heritage, and operational requirements despite the site’s extreme constraints.
